Weight loss from a physical fitness, health, or medicine point of view is the reduction of the body mass. Another source of unexplained reduction in total mass of an individual include diseases like pancreatitis, diarrhea, gastritis, peptic ulcers, and inflammatory bowel disease.

Research shows that individuals who live with stress lose mass fast. There is however, latest research that reveals that high level of stress causes obesity and overweight in people. Modification of lifestyle or living conditions might also cause this problem.

Intentional mass reduction is a personal initiative directed at cutting on total body mass. The target may be to improve body fitness, appearance, or health. Athletes seek reduce body mass to improve performance or to attain a certain level necessary to participate in given sports. Involvement in physical activities and regulation of diet and feeding habits are the key approaches used to attain this objective.
